30 Ways To Wait For The iPhone 3G, #27 Card Games

This entry is part 27 of 30 in the series 30 Ways To Wait For The iPhone 3G

I’m back from my siesta, I accidentaly took a two hour nap yesterday evening but I felt good afterwards. I hope everyone else enjoyed their naps as well. It’s time to get back to the iPhone though. In some quick news about the iPhone 3G. In a very exciting tidbit, the Apple stores and AT&T stores are getting their iPhone 3G displays. They are just like the 1st iPhone displays, they just have the plastic back now to look like the 3G iPhone. Here is a picture of a front.

In something a little more exciting the New Zealand iPhone launches at midnight, and the UK stores are sold out from their pre-orders. Personally the midnight launch is something I would really prefer for here in the states. I guess that is some of my nerd coming out. They always launch the good video games at midnight, and I would much rather go at midnight than get up at 6am to go get my iPhone. It seems it would be much more fun and everyone else would be wide awake. Overall it would be a better experience, what do you think? Get your iPhone at midnight, or get your iPhone at 6am. As usual there isn’t much news leading up to the launch but I’m sure after the launch things are going to go crazy. We’ll all be tired of the same old news stories over and over again!

Well let’s get down to something to do today! This is an activity for a group of people, atleast 2 for some of these games. You will also need a deck of cards as we will be playing cards today! I am going to show you three of my favorite card games. I don’t want to bore you with a list of 10 games, and also I want you to recommend some games for me to learn. So here are my top 3 favorite card games.

#1 Speed

speed is a card game were each player tries to get rid of all his or her cards. It is a very fast game which you can play in a matter of minutes. It is played with a 52 card deck and no jokers. The image below shows how to setup your cards. The best way is to deal the center cards first. Deal all 12 of them and then deal 20 to yourself and hand the rest over to the other person. It is so much easier because you only have to count the 20 cards one time (it comes out evenly).

To get started each player flips over the one card in the center. Simultaneously, opposing players place cards either ascending or descending in rank according to one of the cards in the middle. For example, if a 7 was one of the middle cards, players could play either a 6 or an 8. The cards can also make a complete cycle, going from a King to an Ace to a 2 or vice-versa. A player can take more cards from his drawing pile during any time; however, a player can have no more than five cards in his hand at any one time. When both players cannot play any of their cards, a card from each replacement pile (the piles of 5 on the outside middle) is turned over and play resumes. If however there are no more cards in the replacement pile you flip over the entire pile (so all the middle cards are now upside down) and play off of the top two.You win by having no more cards in your hand and no more in your pile that started with 15 cards and the game is officially over when you shout “SPEED! I always beat my girlfriend at this game, that’s probably why I like playing it so much, haha!

#2 Spoons

Spoons isn’t as easy to explain but still a very fun game. The objective of Spoons is to get rid of all your cards before anyone else. You have to get four of a kind to be able to grab a spoon. Then everyone else jumps and scrambles for the extra spoons to stay in the game. Since there is one less spoon than there are players one person ends up without a spoon. They are then out of the next round. To keep this from being too easy, there are a number of rules to remember, violation of which always results in the same penalty (draw a card). It is best to use a pack of 104 (two standard 52-card packs shuffled together, without any jokers). You can have from three to eight players. For a group of x players, there should be x-1 spoons. They should be piled in the center of the table, where any player can reach them. For safety’s sake, do not attempt to use any other utensils (forks, knives, grapefruit spoons) in this game. You don’t want to impale your hand reaching for one! Rule violations are pointed out (literally) by “razzing”. Any and all players who recognize the violation have to point at the perpetrator and make a certain noise — the preferred sound is “ZZZZT!” or “ERRRR!”, perhaps best described as the sound one hears on game shows when a question is answered incorrectly or time runs out. Players who can’t make this noise can use one of their own, for example, “dingdingdingdingding!”

#3 Go Fish!

The classic card game. It was in fact the first card game I had ever learned. I remember having Garfield cards and playing go fish for hours! How can such a simple game last for soo long? Anyone know? Well here are the rules. First, shuffle the deck, and deal each player seven cards. Take out all of your pairs and place them beside you. Take the rest of the deck and scatter it on the surface.Have the the player to the left of the dealer go first. This player asks another if they have a certain card. (For example, “Do you have any fours?”) There are two possible outcomes:If the player has the card they give it to the asker. The asker will then place the pair down on the surface. They also get another turn. If the player doesn’t have the card they will say “Go fish”. Then, the asker pick a random card from the surface, and the person to their left goes next. Know that if a player gets a pair (from fishing or asking) they get another turn. Count how many pairs of cards you have once they are all gone. The player with the most cards wins!

So I’ve now loaded you up with my three favorite card games. They are fun to play when you are just tired of lounging in front of the TV, and as you wait for the iPhone 3G. Give me some recommendations to try out. I’m always open to a new card game. Tell me what you think? If this tires you, then refer to #26 haha.

The midnight release would be awesome! Why is Apple being difficult?! First making me wait a month to get it after it is announced and then making me get up early to go get it! All three of those cards games are awesome. Every time one of them is played fun times ensue!

I know man, I think a midnight release would be a lot more high profile too. I mean maybe it’s for safety the PS3’s release had people getting hurt at midnight. Still for an iPhone you never know what people will do. Teach me a new card game!

It might be for safety. You know that saying “Freaks come out at night” maybe Steve Jobs is scared of them or just scared of the dark! lol

Have you ever played the card game Kemps? It’s another one of my favorites.
