The Twitter Showdown, iPhone 3G Style

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series 30 Things To Do With Your iPhone 3G

Here is DAY ONE of the new series everybody, please enjoy!

When it comes to Twitter I am a loyal user. I’ve gone from not understanding the point of Twitter to being addicted in about 1 week. I had heard of Twitter from the super addicted Sarah Lane, on the podcast Pop Siren. I thought I might as well try it out and see what this is all about. So I did, I signed up and tried my first tweet. Of course no one was there to hear my first tweet and show me how to be a real tweeter, but I soon learned. I am now getting close to having 100 followers, although I believe two who just followed me are spammers. I know some people have thousands of followers, but I’m the new guy to this game so give me a chance! I have tried every Twitter desktop client in the world, and have fallen in love with Twitterrific. It’s a great desktop app, and works like a charm. When I say works like a charm that’s only when Twitter’s service is up and running with no hiccups. The last week or so Twitter seems to be getting those growing pains out of the way, and everyone is tweeting away happily. The failwhale makes an apperance every once and a while, just not every hour these days. I didn’t like Twhirl that much, nor Chitter, or Twitterpod. Although those would be runners up in my eyes. Twitterrific takes the cake for the best OS X client, but in marches the iPhone 3G!

I knew that when the iPhone 3G came out, it was going to be soo much easier to Tweet from my phone. No longer would I use text messages to update my Twitter. I was already set on downloading Twitterrific and sticking to that, as it was a great desktop client. I downloaded it as soon as I got my grubby paws on my iPhone 3G and Twittered away. Things were great for the first day or two, then I found a rare gem that outshined Twitterrific on the iPhone. It goes by the name Twittelator, maybe because it is the ANNIHELATOR of all Twitter apps? I downloaded Twittelator and gave it a shot, I was blown away. For one the UI is soo much cleaner than in Twitterrific. I guess the same UI from the desktop version of Twitterrific just doesn’t cut it on the iPhone’s screen. It’s not like it’s a really bad UI, just not as clean as Twittelator. By the way, I’m not paying $10 for a lighter interface!!!

In Twittelator each individual tweet is seperated by users, a double tap on their picture takes you to a semi profile page. From there you can follow, favorite, etc… just like in Twitterrific, but something it does different is show their other friends and lets you see their tweets. A good way to find people like you! In reality they both do the same thing, let you tweet, but to me Twittelator does the job much more effecient. It’s got a better UI, easier to use features, doesn’t bug you with ads, etc… and those ads waste bandwith for the people that don’t get to have unlimited data!! The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was the picture service. I found Twittelator to be soo much faster at uploading a picture and then being able to tweet it. Also it isn’t rotated the wrong way as Twitterrific does. Twitterrific was painfully slow in trying to tweet a picture from my iPhone, that made me finally give up my favorite Twitterrific and stick to Twittelator on my iPhone. I still love Twitterrific on my desktop, and perhaps it can rule my iPhone once it changes it’s ways. But that my friends, only time will tell.

Now it’s your turn, what is your opinion on Twitter? Twitter on the desktop, and on the iPhone? Am I missing out on an even better app? Please do let me know! Here are some screenshots from my iPhone below.

This is the main Twitter window, first from Twittelator, then Twitterrific.
